December Designin’ Sewing Challenge

2 Oct

This sewing challenge is from Lanyos Handmade/Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

One of my fashion icons is Megan Markle. She is a gorgeous lady with taste for tailored fashion (notably, not usually seen in sparkly, sequined outfits).

Here’s Megan’s outfit that inspired me to create my own copy:

The designer is Everlane.

For my copy I chose this pattern:

I selected the view D jumpsuit and had some beige/tan cotton chambray fabric in my stash. First I made a muslin and discovered a major design problem. With the long zipper in the back I couldn’t manage to get in and out of the darn thing! One other problem was the back neck, which gaped on me. I adjusted the fit by adding two small darts in the back neck.

So for the finished jumpsuit I put in a front zipper and back neck darts. The pattern includes side pockets which are a nice detail. Here’s the jumpsuit, including a self-sash.

I took some photos wearing the jumpsuit, but forgot to include a bodyguard lurking in the background.

A second project for the December design challenge is a jacket. It has a shawl collar and open front. I have noted two designers with similar versions: here and here. The Winter White Shawl Collar Jacket by Habitat Clothing and the (orange) Shawl Collar jacket by Eileen Fisher.

Here’s the Winter White Jacket:

These jackets have simple lines with a dropped shoulder, large patch pockets and a folding shawl collar.

The pattern I used for my version is the Wiksten Unfolding Jacket by Jenny Gordy.

Here’s my copy, using the Wiksten Unfolding Jacket pattern.

The shell of my jacket is forest green broadcloth and it’s lined with green print quilting cotton.

  1. Thank you for joining in on the #designindecember sewing challenge! I’d love to share your posts, if I may! Hopefully it will be easy to find the designer of Megan’s garment and I look forward to seeing the photos of you wearing it! It’s a lovely outfit and I am happy you were able to make it your own!

What a good job! You chose your pattern wisely, and made perfect alterations to it.

I’m thinking of making a second jumpsuit with a more sleeveless top portion, so it looks more like the Everlane jumpsuit. I’ll have to shop for the fabric before I can sew it!

  4. I love that style of jacket! I can wear it loose or wrap it tight around me depending on how chilly it is! The green looks lovely on you too! 🙂

Thanks! This style of jacket has an easy-to-sew lining.

  6. Just a friendly reminder to let me know before Dec 31 which outfit you would like to enter for the vote! 🤗 They are both lovely, it will be difficult to choose! 😁 Also I would like to share you post in the Designin’ December Facebook group! Thank you!
